Next Generation Leadership Series: The Power of Consistency

The Power of Consistency

By Jordan Tyson

A master gives three servants different amounts of money (talents) and leaves. Two servants faithfully steward and grow what they’re given. One servant, out of fear, does nothing and hides his talent. When the master returns, the consistent, faithful servants are rewarded. The one who failed to act consistently is rebuked.

Our generation glamorizes instant success, wins on social media, celebrities, but, realistically, that is not real life and can be a real trap.

To win a championship you have to go through a full regular season first and all the practices, injuries, problems outside of your control. Then you get to the championship game. We post the win.

Small, consistent effort over time, that’s where the game is actually won. That’s the power of consistency.

What does consistency look like when no one is watching?

Honestly it looks and feels boring

One of my favorite quotes is “the bored man gets paid.” To me, that means things become relatively simple when you build consistent structure around what needs to be done. When something becomes routine, you stop relying on emotion and start relying on discipline. Consistency keeps you moving forward.

When have I confused motivation with consistency—and what did that cost me?

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way in several areas of my life, but working out stands out the most.

Early on, I’d get a rush of motivation, research every exercise possible, work out for hours, and go all in. Then the next day? Completely burned out. Zero drive. No follow-through.

Also don’t ask if I know how to play guitar… working on it 😀

Motivation got me started, but the lack of consistency made sure I didn’t stay. It cost me a lot of time, but I do see that as a valuable lesson because it showed me what actually works..

Why is consistency often more powerful than talent or intensity?

Talent is usually a gift, a natural ability. Consistency, on the other hand, is earned.

The quick win is enticing & looks so attractive but usually leaves you worse than where you were before…

When you consistently pursue a skill or task, progress compounds over time. You learn through grit, repetition, and showing up when it’s not exciting. That slow development often beats raw talent because it builds discipline, resilience, and mastery things talent alone can’t guarantee.

How often do good ideas fail—not because they were wrong, but because consistency was absent?

I’d say a high percentage.

Everything I’m decent at today exists because of consistency, not my book smarts….If we launch a great idea, within Next Gen of Lancaster, promote it once, and never follow through, it doesn’t build trust or identity.

I’ve noticed this in myself and others that we fall in love with new ideas fast, but move on just as quickly. Without consistency, even great ideas don’t stand a chance.

How have I stayed consistent during seasons when results weren’t visible?

My faith is the key in all of this. For me.

I don’t always understand why consistency matters in a specific moment or where it’s leading, but I trust that God has a plan for it. That allows me to remain consistent through the time where I don’t see results. I have memories of when I remained faithful, God’s grace poured out, and I reflect on those moments in times of doubt..

This is a kicker because this delayed gratification muscle is a muscle it can take time to build up and I still work mine out.

Another way I think about consistency is like making deposits into a bank account. You don’t see immediate results, but over time it grows and compounds. Having that visual helps me stay patient when progress feels invisible.

Lastly, it isn’t about being perfect we all fall short. It’s about progress and moving forward deliberately, by choice, each day.

I like this word consistent… a synonym for that could be faithful. I like that word too. For fun go back and replace each time I used consistent and replace it with faithful thanks for reading and God bless!!
